A little bit of history

King James the 1st of England (6th of Scotland), created the Royal Mail over 350 years ago. Partly to improve communications, but more importantly to generate revenue for himself! (It seems parliament was always saying “no you can’t have more money, 10 pairs of shoes are quite enough.”) Now Kings James didn’t want anyone else cashing in on the idea so he made it illegal for any other body to deliver addressed mail. The punishment? Hung until almost dead, then burn’t at the stake!

In 2003 the government decided it was time to change the law. This change in the law meant that private companies could be licensed to operate a postal service.

So who is delivering the mail these days?

Now, you will have seen non royal mail markings on letters. But wait a minute, wasn’t it a Royal Mail post man who delivered the mail? Yes, that’s because 99% of the final mile of any letters journey is delivered by the Royal Mail. The newly licensed postal companies (whose markings you see on your mail) collect the mail from the sender, sort the mail and deliver it to Royal Mail local sorting offices from where the Post men and women deliver it to the door.

In 2008 LDS was granted a licence to deliver mail.

The LDS Service

LDS now offer a local final mile service. It is our objective to offer a first class service in the CB post code area. However, the service we currently offer is somewhat different.

We currently offer a stagger delivery service in the CB1-5 area (see our map below). We can collect mail clients have for this area and we deliver it over the following five working days. So some will go the day after the collection, some the next day, and so on.

Who can benefit from this service?

Businesses sending marketing material within this area. Or businesses with sizable amounts of non urgent CB area mail.
